BAD BOY, GOOD GIRL

Vettriano ha affermato più volte: “Nei miei dipinti voglio fermare quel momento in cui tutto sta per accadere”. Il ragazzo e la ragazza a cui fa riferimento il titolo, sembrano cristallizzati in una posa che sottende un dialogo ancora tutto da avvenire. Le due figure sostano sul lungomare di una spiaggia, forse la stessa che l'artista lega ai suoi più intimi ricordi, dando l'impressione che la scena possa essere autobiografica. L'ombrello nero sostenuto dal ragazzo, oltre a contrapporsi a quello bianco alle spalle della giovane, rimanda alla mente dell'osservatore la contrapposizione tra bene e male e la necessità di equilibrio tra le parti. Entrambi gli sguardi dei protagonisti sembrano penetrare l'uno dell'anima dell'altro, come se ci fosse un qualcosa di non detto; la tensione trapela dalla posizione delle mani sui fianchi della ragazza, che si protende verso l'uomo con espressione determinata. Alle loro spalle, la vita continua, mentre la loro relazione sembra estraniarsi dalla realtà circostante e svolgersi tutta sotto il perimetro dell'ombrello, che contemporaneamente ripara e contiene, rendendo la scena intrisa di mistero.

Vettriano has repeatedly stated: "In my paintings I want to capture that moment when everything is about to happen". The boy and the girl to whom the title refers, seem to be crystallized in a pose that implies a dialogue yet to come. The two figures stand on the seafront of a beach, perhaps the same one that the artist links to his most intimate memories, giving the impression that the scene may be autobiographical. The black umbrella held by the boy, in addition to contrasting with the white one behind the girl, brings to the viewer's mind the contrast between good and evil and the need for balance between the parts. Both protagonists' gazes seem to penetrate each other's souls, as if there were something unsaid; the tension transpires from the position of the hands on the girl's hips, as she leans towards the man with a determined expression. Behind them, life goes on, while their relationship seems to alienate itself from the surrounding reality and take place entirely under the perimeter of the umbrella, which simultaneously shelters and contains, making the scene imbued with mystery.
