Un uomo solo sosta in piedi al bancone di un locale affacciato sulla spiaggia, mentre la vita continua a scorrere serena attraverso le finestre. La sua postura, leggermente inclinata in avanti, richiama un atteggiamento riflessivo. La luceestiva rende l’esterno abbacinante, in contrasto con l’interno del diner. Il riferimento visivo di Vettriano in quest’opera è l’estetica di primo novecento: il dipinto è infatti ispirato alla vita e alle imprese di Sir Malcolm Campbell, pilota automobilistico britannico, noto per aver detenuto il record mondiale di velocità su terra e acqua in diverse occasioni durante gli anni ‘20 e ‘30. La serie a cui appartiene quest’opera fu commissionata da Sir Terence Conran per il Bluebird Club di Londra.

The summer light makes the exteriordazzling, in contrast to the diner’s interior. The visual reference of Vettriano in thiswork is the early twentieth-century aesthetic: the painting is, in fact, inspired bythe life and achievements of Sir Malcolm Campbell, a British racing driver famousfor having held the world land and water speed record on several occasions duringthe 1920s and ‘30s. The series to which this work belongs was commissioned bySir Terence Conran for the Bluebird Club in London.
